Dr. Bill Claycomb is a Principal Researcher at Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute, where he leads multidisciplinary projects related to cyber security and human behavior. His current research investigates novel techniques for detection, prevention, and mitigation of insider threats for government and industry.

Bill’s has been conducting cyber security research since 1993, initially focusing on biometric security systems. Since then, his portfolio of work has included a broad range of topics such as malware detection, cloud computing security, wireless and mobile security, enterprise architecture, digital rights enforcement, and identity management. Prior to joining SEI, Bill pioneered early efforts for preventing insider attacks on enterprise information systems at Sandia National Laboratories, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Bill has a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Computer Science, has published numerous conference and journal papers, and has chaired several IEEE and ACM peer-reviewed events related to cyber security issues.r TAG members; $60 for nonmembers; $5 student; $0 retired members

Event Overview: 

During this session, attendees will learn practical strategies for building an effective insider threat program, to mitigate threats from malicious and non-malicious insiders (current/former employees, contractors, sub-contractors, supply chain, and other trusted business partners).  During the talk, numerous insider incidents will be presented to detail how incidents tend to evolve over time.  The session will conclude by reviewing best practices for the mitigation of insider threats and presenting a framework to develop insider threat controls, highlighting the development of behavioral and technical potential risk indicator development, deployment, and measurement.  CPU – 3hrs
